Ideal for: Advanced and Tec Divers
Truk or Chuuk Lagoon is located in Micronesia over 1000 miles north of Papua and is a coral reef fringed natural lagoon that during WWII was used by the Japanese fleet until being bombed by the US in 1944 during Operation Hailstorm. The battle has left more than 100 wrecks including warships, aircraft, supply ships and submarines for divers to discover and due to the sheltered conditions and good visibility exploration is relatively easy though some of the deeper wrecks are for more experienced deep and tec divers.
Though the wrecks are the main reason divers visit Truk the marine life is not to be overlooked with sightings of Reef Sharks (Black Tip, White Tip, Silvertip and Grey), Eagle Rays, Turtles and even the odd Manta Ray or Whaleshark is not uncommon especially on the outer reefs.
Diving Truk from a liveaboard will allow more dives in a day then resort based trips.
Fujikawa Maru was an aircraft ferry carrying parts including the wings, engines, tail and fuselages for the Mitsubishi “Zero” making it one of the best wrecks in Truk.
The Nippo Maru is an interesting wreck still fairly well preserved with a tank and artillery on deck.
History buffs will be interested in diving the Shinkoku Maru, a refuelling supply ship that was involved in the attack on Pearl Harbour.
