The Caribbean

The Caribbean Sea has long been popular with divers for its warm clear waters teeming with marine life, with varied diving throughout. From the northern Bahamas just off the Florida coast to Trinidad and Tobago in the south, the diving is as rich and individual as the islands and their cultures.

The geography of the islands varies considerably from towering volcanic landscapes to low lying coral cays, and each offers activities and cultural sites which tell of the long history of the area, dating back to when the islands were dominated by European powers.

Diving in the Caribbean is well known for its warm waters, often with excellent visibility due to the generally calm conditions, and fantastic colourful corals. There is diverse marine life, from the gentle giant Whale Shark and the Great Hammerhead to the patrolling Caribbean Reef Sharks, Rays and Turtles that call these waters home.

There are also some very special trips, including diving with Great Hammerheads in the Bahamas and the seasonal migration of Humpback Whales through the Silver Banks which is an occasion not to miss, as these graceful giants socialise, mate and calf in this tropical nursery.

Top Picks

  • The Cayman Islands offer a variety of diving with great wall diving, wrecks and reefs for all abilities, with great marine diversity.  The unique Stingray City dive, where it is possible to get up close and personal with Southern Stingrays, is worth the trip on its own.
  • Belize is home to the world's second longest barrier reef, the famous Great Blue Hole, and some of the best diving in the Caribbean.  The reef life includes regular sightings of Spotted Eagle Rays, Turtles and a great selection of Caribbean reef fish and critters.  Also not to be missed are the jungles and temples of the interior.  The waters of Belize also play host to the annual Whale Shark migration, though never guaranteed it is a great chance to see these gentle giants.
  • Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is rated as some having some of the world's best diving.  Accessible to divers of all experience, the walls and reefs offer Turtles, Rays, Barracuda and a host of reef fish.  The area has a rich history dating back to before the Conquistadors, to a world dominating Mayan Empire. Evidence of this is scattered across the area, with stunning temple complexes and jungle trails.
  • Silver Banks, just off the coast of the Dominican Republic, plays host to migrating Humpback Whales from January to April, who leave their feeding grounds at the southern and northern oceans to socialize, mate and calve in the warm, safe waters of the Silver Banks.  Liveaboard trips offer the opportunity to observe and snorkel with these beautiful and mystic giants, for an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.
